Land-use Framework

Today’s rapid growth in population and economic activity is placing unprecedented pressure on Alberta’s landscapes. Oil and gas, forestry and mining, agriculture and recreation, housing and infrastructure are all in competition to use the land. There are more and more people, doing more and more activities, but on the same piece of land. This not only increases the number of conflicts between competing users, but it often stresses the land itself.

To ensure our children and grandchildren benefit from the land as much as we do today, we need to manage the land, and all the activity on and below it, in a responsible way. The current land management system, which served us well in the past, risks being overwhelmed by the present scope and pace of activity.

Following an 18-month comprehensive consultation process involving thousands of Albertans, the Government of Alberta developed the Draft Land-use Framework to address the growth pressures facing the province.
